Frequently Asked Questions
What Does a House Call Service Offer & What Can I Expect?
1. Convenience
With a veterinary house call, your pet can relax in their own home environment. Getting your pets to the vet can be stressful for you, too. Between broken carriers, missing leashes, car trouble, or finding a babysitter for the kids, you already have enough to worry about. Let us come to you.
2. Personalized Care
Clinical veterinary visits can often be rushed, with little time to ask questions or get in-depth care. With house call visits, we can take a little extra time to provide personalized care. We are able to observe your pet in their natural surroundings to detect signs of health issues that may be slight or silent in a normal veterinary clinic setting. These visits enable us to get to know your pet better, and we can recommend treatments that are best suited to the healthcare needs of each individual pet.
3. Reduced Exposure to Infectious Disease
Dogs, especially, are naturally friendly and curious, but touching noses in the waiting room can be a bad idea. Mobile veterinary visits can reduce the risk of exposure to infection from other dogs and cats. Home visits can also be easier and safer for pets with terminal illnesses or conditions that require ongoing treatment.
4. Less Stress Could Lead to a More Accurate Diagnosis
Dogs and cats sometimes suffer from ‘white coat syndrome’ just like the humans that love them. When stressed, your pet’s heart rate increases, their breathing quickens, muscles tense, and blood pressure can rise. We find dogs and, especially cats, are much calmer and more themselves in the comfort of their own home.
5. The Home Environment May Reveal Clues About Your Pet’s Illness
Observing your dog or cat on their home turf can help us make a more accurate diagnosis. We often notice things in the pet’s environment that turn out to be the cause of their health or behavior problems. Sometimes things seem so small owners don’t think to mention them when they bring their pets into the clinic.
6. Safety During the Visit
Safety for all during the visit is extremely important. We ask that you be upfront and forthcoming with a pet’s behavior and history. Even the happiest of pets can be wary of strangers who enter their home and territory. Our goal is for a visit to be as smooth and seamless as possible, and in some cases, this does mean a muzzle, a “kitty purrito wrap,” and/or a sedative so a safe and thorough exam can be accomplished.
7. Medical Records
We do ask that if your pet has been seen by a veterinarian in the past, you provide any and all pertinent medical records, types of medications they are currently taking, and any important medical history. This allows us to treat your pet effectively and makes us aware of any adverse reactions to medications they may have had in the past.
8. Referral Options
If we determine that surgery, x-rays, or specialized care are needed, we are able to refer you and your pet to a veterinary hospital that can provide those specific services for you.
